Investigation of Psychiatric and Neuropsychological Correlates of Default Mode Network and Dorsal Attention Network Anticorrelation in Children.

The default mode network (DMN) and dorsal attention network (DAN) typically show an 'anticorrelation' in healthy adults, reflecting a separation between internal and external thought. Reduced separation of these networks has been proposed as a mechanism for cognitive deficits in psychiatric disorders, but this link had rarely been tested in pre-adolescent children. Using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study, the largest sample to date of 9- to 10-year-old children (N=6543), the analysis examined the relationship between DMN/DAN anticorrelation strength and psychiatric symptoms.

The Effect of Mindfulness Meditation Training on Biological Acute Stress Responses in Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) lowers stress hormone and inflammatory markers more than an attention control class in adults with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Seventy participants with GAD were randomly assigned to MBSR or a control class. Before and after the intervention, they completed the Trier Social Stress Test. The MBSR group showed a significantly greater reduction in adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and pro-inflammatory cytokine concentrations compared to the control group. These findings provide the first combined hormonal and immunological evidence that MBSR may enhance resilience to stress in people with GAD.
