Effects of esketamine on postoperative pain and inflammatory factors in children undergoing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.

In children undergoing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, adding esketamine during anesthesia reduced postoperative pain and emergence agitation without increasing side effects. Eighty children were randomly assigned to receive esketamine or a control. Pain scores (FLACC scale) were lower in the esketamine group at all measured times from 15 minutes to 24 hours after surgery (e.g., 2.4 vs. 3.4 at 15 minutes). Emergence agitation scores were also lower. Blood markers of inflammation (C-reactive protein and interleukin-6) rose less in the esketamine group. Recovery times and adverse reactions were similar between groups.

Effects of sub-anesthetic doses of esketamine on immune function and postoperative negative emotions in acoustic neuroma patients: a randomized clinical trial.

A double-blind randomized trial found that perioperative sub-anesthetic esketamine reduced postoperative depression and anxiety and improved sleep quality in patients undergoing acoustic neuroma surgery. The incidence of depression on postoperative day 1 was 7.7% in the esketamine group versus 31.6% in the placebo group, and on day 3 it was 0.0% versus 15.8%. Anxiety and sleep disturbances also significantly decreased. No significant differences were observed in immune function, postoperative pain scores, or adverse events between groups.
