Mindfulness and equanimity moderate approach/avoidance motor responses.

People tend to automatically approach pleasant things and avoid unpleasant ones. Two experiments tested whether mindfulness practices and the personality trait of equanimity can reduce this tendency. In the first experiment, 84 participants were randomly assigned to a breathing meditation, a body-scan meditation, or an active control condition before completing an Approach/Avoidance Task. In the second experiment, 71 participants were grouped by high or low trait equanimity. Breathing meditation and higher equanimity each reduced automatic approach and avoidance biases, while body-scan meditation did not. The findings suggest that both brief mindfulness practice and stable equanimity can weaken automatic motivational responses to positive and negative stimuli.

Effectiveness of traditional meditation retreats: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Traditional meditation retreats are moderately to largely effective at reducing depression, anxiety, and stress, and improving quality of life, according to a meta-analysis of 21 studies involving 2,912 participants. Effect sizes were moderate in pre-post analyses (Hedge's g = 0.45) and when comparing retreats to control groups (Hedge's g = 0.49), with results maintained at follow-up. Large effects were found for anxiety, depression, and stress; moderate effects for emotional regulation and quality of life. Changes in mindfulness strongly moderated clinical outcomes. No differences emerged between meditation styles. Significant heterogeneity across trials limits the strength of conclusions.
