Randomized control clinical trial to assess the effect of meditation on selected clinical outcomes in patients with Parkinson’s disease

Meditation may improve both motor and non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease, but evidence on non-motor effects remains inconclusive. This randomized controlled trial at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka will compare an 8-week meditation program with weekly guided sessions against usual care in patients with Hoehn and Yahr stages I–III Parkinson's disease. Outcomes include motor symptoms, non-motor symptoms, cognitive function, quality of life, gait performance, and peripheral motor nerve function. The study aims to determine whether meditation can induce neuroplastic changes and enhance quality of life, potentially supporting its integration into Parkinson's disease management.

Effect of long-term meditation on cognitive status and selected neurophysiological parameters

Long-term meditators scored higher on all cognitive domains—immediate memory, visuospatial ability, language, attention, and delayed memory—compared to matched non-meditators, with all differences statistically significant. They also showed greater alpha brainwave activity in the right temporal region at rest and more high-frequency wave activity in the frontopolar region during meditation. Nerve conduction velocity and amplitude in the tibial nerve were higher in meditators, and visual evoked potential latencies were shorter. The findings suggest that long-term meditation is associated with enhanced cognitive function and measurable changes in brain activity and nerve conduction.
