Empirical Phenomenological Psychopathology: Aims, Methods, and Explanatory Relevance.

Phenomenological psychopathology builds explanatory accounts at the level of first-person experience to explain why certain phenomena appear in psychiatric conditions. This paper articulates the philosophical commitments of this approach, focusing on the self-disorder model, and shows how it serves typification (diagnostic classification) and pathogenetic insight (explaining how core symptoms emerge). It examines three research paradigms—clinical case study, quantitative methods, and qualitative methods—demonstrating each paradigm's strengths and limitations. The practice of phenomenological explanation is best understood as an integrative process where awareness of these strengths and limitations shapes study design, interpretation of results, and decisions about future empirical projects.
