Exploring the nature of consciousness: Michael Grazino's attention scheme theory and Bernard Baars' global workspace theory

HUMANITARIAN STUDIOS: PEDAGOGICS, PSYCHOLOGY, PHILOSOPHY July 14, 2023 Kostyantyn Derid, Vera Dodonova

The article analyzes two prominent theories of consciousness: Michael Graziano's attention schema theory and Bernard Baars' global workspace theory. It describes each theory's key characteristics, what aspects of consciousness they aim to explain, their neurobiological commitments, and the empirical evidence cited in their support. The analysis shows how these theories help explain how the brain creates conscious experience, which is important for progress in cognitive science and neuroscience. Understanding consciousness is also relevant to philosophical and ethical discussions about responsibility, self-awareness, and social existence. The research promotes interdisciplinary interaction between neurobiology, psychology, philosophy, and computer science.
