P02-336 - Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for Major Depression: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

European Psychiatry 2010 Alberto Chiesa, Alessandro Serretti

ObjectiveMindfulness based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a standardized meditation program which has been proposed as a therapeutic option for the prevention of relapses in patients suffering from major depression (MD). The aim of the present review and meta-analysis is to provide an estimate of the efficacy of MBCT for MD patients.MethodsA literature search was undertaken using MEDLINE, ISI web...

The use of a series of ketamine infusions in two patients with treatment-resistant depression.

The Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences 2010 Michael Messer, Irina V Haller, Pamela Larson et al.

Treatment-resistant depression often leads to increased morbidity and disability. The authors report the use of ketamine, a selective N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, in two patients with treatment-resistant depression. Multiple ketamine treatments may provide an effective rapid antidepressant effect with prolonged benefit.

Ecstasy (MDMA) and its Relationship with Self- Report Depression, Anxiety and Schizotypy

Clínica y Salud 2010 Lisa Wood, Barkus Emma 1 citation

Aims: The relationship between ecstasy and affective psychological symptoms are still subject to debate. We aimed to examine the relationship between Ecstasy use and self-report depression, anxiety and schizotypy. Design: Data were collected via structured remote self-report questionnaires. Participants: Participants were split into three groups: a control group with no ecstasy use, a light...

Oral Administration of the NMDA Receptor Antagonist S-Ketamine as Add-On Therapy of Depression: A Case Series

Pharmacopsychiatry December 11, 2009 Georgios Paslakis, Morin Gilles, Andreas Meyer‐Lindenberg et al. 66 citations

We intended to assess safety, response to treatment and time to response of 1.25 mg/kg oral S-ketamine as add-on to standard antidepressants in four depressed patients. Two patients with melancholic depression responded early and stayed in remission, while two patients with distinct somatic symptoms, chronicity or atypical features did not respond. The limited number of patients does not allow...

Emerging role of glutamate in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder.

Brain Research Reviews October 2009 Kenji Hashimoto

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common, chronic, recurrent mental illness that affects millions of individuals worldwide. To date, the monoaminergic systems (serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine) have received the most attention in the neurobiology of MDD, and all classes of antidepressants target these monoaminergic systems. Accumulating evidence suggests that the glutamatergic system...

Effects of Intravenous Ketamine on Explicit and Implicit Measures of Suicidality in Treatment-Resistant Depression

Biological Psychiatry July 9, 2009 R. Price, Matthew K. Nock, D. Charney et al.

Background Intravenous ketamine has shown rapid antidepressant effects in early trials, making it a potentially attractive candidate for depressed patients at imminent risk of suicide. The Implicit Association Test (IAT), a performance-based measure of association between two concepts, may have utility in suicide assessment. Methods Twenty-six patients with treatment-resistant depression were...

The effectiveness of a stress coping program based on mindfulness meditation on the stress, anxiety, and depression experienced by nursing students in Korea.

Nurse Education Today July 2009 Yune Sik Kang, So Young Choi, Eunjung Ryu

This study examined the effectiveness of a stress coping program based on mindfulness meditation on the stress, anxiety, and depression experienced by nursing students in Korea. A nonequivalent, control group, pre-posttest design was used. A convenience sample of 41 nursing students were randomly assigned to experimental (n=21) and control groups (n=20). Stress was measured with the PWI-SF...

Riluzole for relapse prevention following intravenous ketamine in treatment-resistant depression: a pilot randomized, placebo-controlled continuation trial

The International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology March 17, 2009 Sanjay J. Mathew, James W. Murrough, Marije Aan Het Rot et al. 295 citations

The N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptor antagonist ketamine may have rapid, albeit transient, antidepressant properties. This study in patients with treatment-resistant major depression (TRD) aimed to (1) replicate the acute efficacy of single-dose intravenous (i.v.) ketamine; (2) test the efficacy of the glutamate-modulating agent riluzole in preventing post-ketamine relapse; and...
