Abstract

Parapsychology may be defined as the scientific study of anomalous experiences such as telepathy and psychokinesis. The aim of this chapter is to provide an introduction to this field of inquiry. First, various categories of psi (paranormal experiences) are outlined. Second, psi-conducive conditions (e.g., dreaming and meditation) are discussed. Third, several models that have been proposed to account for the anomalous transfer of information are examined. Subsequently, the psychology of paranormal belief is explored. This chapter concludes with a discussion of the relationship between parapsychology and transpersonal psychology.
