Abstract
Big History provides an integrative framework linking cosmic, biological, and cultural evolution within a unified narrative. Yet, several foundational mysteries—dark matter and energy, the quantum nature of reality, the origins of life, and the emergence of consciousness—remain unresolved. This paper argues that the study of Big History could benefit from incorporating speculative but rigorously framed approaches to these frontiers. By explicitly acknowledging uncertainty and distinguishing hypothesis from evidence, Big History can broaden its inquiry while maintaining its empirical integrity. After outlining key unresolved questions, this paper reviews several unconventional but influential hypotheses, including Wheeler’s participatory universe, anthropic principles, informational and holographic cosmologies, and quantum theories of consciousness. It also considers how cross-cultural cosmologies, such as Mayan and Taoist systems, parallel modern complexity and process perspectives. Through this discussion, the paper suggests that Big History can serve as a disciplined platform for integrating speculative inquiry about the ultimate nature of reality, intelligence, and the cosmos.
