Key points Argues that the three proposed relationships between qualia and selfhood each contain internal contradictions, as shown through a thought experiment about translating qualia, and concludes that selfhood must be logically separated from qualia.

Abstract

The article substantiates the need to study the relationship between the quality as sense-datum and selfhood. Three variations of this relationship are given: the selfhood as the result of the totality of qualia, the selfhood as a quale of a special kind, and the selfhood as a phenomenon of consciousness that is distinctive from qualia. To justify each position, the views of Strawson, Hume, Parfet, Nagel, and Domasio are cited. A gedanken experiment about the translation of qualia is formulated, on the example of which the author finds internal contradictions in the admitted types of relationships of the studied concepts. The conclusion is made that the separation of selfhood from qualia is logically deductive.
