| Key findings | The review presents van Löben Sels' argument that shamanic phenomena, understood as a symbolic process, contribute to the evolution of consciousness and that healing must address body and psyche together. It contends that an understanding of the "shaman complex" is essential for students of Jung's analytic psychology who want to harness these creative and healing forces within the imagination. |
Abstract
ABSTRACT Robin van Löben Sels’ book Shamanic Dimensions of Psychotherapy: Healing through the Symbolic Process is reviewed. Early visions and dreams led the author to a shamanic understanding of early physical and emotional wounds. In her book, she emphasizes the importance of healing the body as well as the psyche. Shamanic phenomena, which can be understood as a symbolic process, contributes to the evolution of consciousness. An understanding of the shaman complex is essential for all students of Jung’s analytic psychology who want to harness these powerful creative and healing forces within the imagination.
