Abstract

5Rhythms (5R) is a dance-based practice founded by Gabrielle Roth (1941-2012) in the late 1970s at the Esalen Institute (Big Sur, CA, USA), a center focused on the development of human potential with a particular emphasis on the body. Roth's teachings were shaped by ecstatic and mystical philosophy, as well as Gestalt therapy. After observing dancers for a decade, Roth noticed that their bodies followed a common pattern characterized by five distinct sequential rhythms—Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness—interconnected like waves. Dancing these waves enables participants to progress through a series of movement states, beginning with fluid and continuous motion, transitioning into staccato patterns and increasingly accelerated movements, and culminating in chaotic, deconstructed expression. This emotional release or ecstatic experience then gives way to a state of lyricism and ecstasy, ultimately settling into stillness. 5R is designed to explore these rhythms, which are described as "vibrations of different states of Being." 5R is often referred to as conscious dancing or "meditation in movement" and is grounded in its own cosmology, which Roth describes as blissful and healing. According to Roth, the practice provides "tools and maps to resurrect yourself, reinvent yourself, heal, and bring oneself back into wholeness, and therefore holiness or sacred self". In 1977, Gabrielle Roth founded The Moving Center® in New York City. It soon grew into an international institution offering teacher training programs and expanding 5Rhythms classes and retreats around the world. With more than 400 certified teachers, 5 rhythms are present on all continents.
