Abstract
The "thermostat as observer" is a recurring motif in philosophy of mind and foundations of physics. We argue, however, that this framing rests on a category mistake — one that generates controversies which resist resolution as long as observation is treated as a property of a device: Where exactly does observerhood begin? What distinguishes an observer from a mere physical process? Our proposal is to shift the level of description. When observation is located not in the device but in the relational structure between systems — in the discrete events at their interface — these questions do not merely get different answers; they become tractable, shifting from disputes about which systems count as observers to the structural question of where and when observation events arise. In the room–thermostat setup, observation is not something the thermostat is, but something that happens between the thermostat and its environment at specific moments. To make this precise, we introduce three notions — context fields, interface, and imprint events. The underlying physics is unchanged. The gain is conceptual: a consciousness-neutral, event-based vocabulary that can serve as a structural baseline for classical control systems and quantum measurement alike.
