Key points Argues that María Zambrano's religious Platonism, organized around the categories of the relationship with life and death, the multiplicity of times, union with the absolute, and mystical carnalization, provides a framework for reading Renaissance mysticism. A critical reading of Teresa of Jesus's poem "Aspiraciones de vida eterna" is used to propose that this perspective can enrich and broaden existing interpretations of her mystical work beyond philological or strictly theological approaches.

Abstract

The article examines the role of religious Platonism in María Zambrano’s theory of mysticism as a starting point for developing a new theoretical framework from which to engage in dialogue with the Renaissance mystical tradition. This framework is constructed on the basis of Zambrano’s categories of: the relationship with life and death, the multiplicity of times, union with the absolute, and mystical carnalization. These allow us to rethink ways of reading the mystical experience beyond philological or strictly theological approaches. To test this proposal, a critical reading of Teresa of Jesus’ poem «Aspiraciones de vida eterna» (Aspirations of Eternal Life) will be carried out, analyzing its symbolic dimension and its orientation towards transcendence. The study seeks to assess the relevance of a Platonic philosophical approach mediated by Zambrano and to show how this perspective can enrich and broaden existing critical interpretations of Teresa’s mystical work.
