Key findings The review reports that trait mindfulness and its facets are associated with lower depression, anxiety, and addiction and with better cognitive function, emotional regulation, and intelligence in adolescents, suggesting a protective role. It concludes that mindfulness-based interventions may benefit adolescents and recommends developing interventions targeting different mindfulness facets to promote overall well-being.

Abstract

The adolescence, a transition phase from childhood to adulthood, is exposed to critical development changes in multiple domains including physical, cognitive, emotional, social, moral, sexual and academic. There is also an increased probability of troubles or illness such as negative behaviour, drug abuse, depression, stress and anxiety which if not addressed could make the transition to adulthood a difficult process. In this regard, psychologists and emerging studies propose the association of trait mindfulness with psychological, cognitive and emotional well-being of adolescents. However, the trait mindfulness concept in adolescent phase is yet emerging. This review aims to present an integrated overview on the relationship of trait mindfulness and the facets of trait mindfulness with positive and negative outcomes in adolescents. For this purpose, the selected reviews were categorised to pathophysiological symptoms, cognitive and emotional functioning. The review highlights the association of trait mindfulness with multiple variables including depression, anxiety, cognitive function, emotional regulation and intelligence, addiction and so forth. The emerging studies indicate a direct link of different facets of trait mindfulness to outcomes suggestive of protective role of trait mindfulness. The review concludes with the benefits of mindfulness-based interventions in adolescents and suggests developing interventions to develop different facets of mindfulness to achieve an over well-being of adolescents.
