Abstract
The subject-self-person trilogy constructed an ontology of minded beings: a Minimal Subject, defined as the bearer of intrinsic normativity and therefore of primitive experience; a Minimal Self, built from that subject by temporal integration; and a Minimal Person, built from that self by social recognition. This paper does two things the trilogy left undone. First, it validates the ontology against disputed and transitional cases — developmental, comparative, pathological, and artificial — showing that a disciplined three-level taxonomy classifies boundary conditions that theories collapsing experience, memory, and social standing into one dimension cannot. Second, it extends the ontology one constructive level downward, introducing the Proto-Subject: an autonomous organized system possessing organization-relative normativity and persistent organizational identity, prior to and presupposed by experience. Subjecthood, selfhood, and personhood are reconstructed as successive constructions upon this foundation, and Artificial General Intelligence is relocated from an ontological category to a capability profile orthogonal to it at every level. The paper's final contribution is to name, without yet building, what the two preceding contributions jointly make visible: the five conditions constituting organization-relative normativity are a philosophical description of exactly the closed causal loop — persistent state maintained, transient computation modifying it, modified state conditioning what comes next — that a companion mathematical program, the PAO trilogy, develops as a formal invariant and shows to induce an information geometry.
