Abstract

The article reconstructs the methodological context in which Jacques Waardenburg’s neo-phenomenology of religion emerges. It argues that Waardenburg’s project is not an external rejection of classical phenomenology of religion, but its internal critical revision. Classical phenomenology gave religious studies a language for describing religious phenomena and preserved attention to meaning, yet it also created the risks of essentialism, theological presupposition and insufficiently verifiable interpretation. On the basis of Waardenburg’s methodological works, the article shows that neo-phenomenology shifts the focus from the search for the essence of religion to the reconstruction of meanings, intentions and supposed objects expressed in actions, texts, symbols and contexts. The independent result of the study is a concise operational scheme for analysing religious meaning.
