Abstract

Adolescent mental health refers to the emotional, psychological, and social well-being of individuals between 10 and 19 years of age. This developmental stage is characterized by rapid physical growth, identity formation, emotional changes, and social pressures, making mental health especially vulnerable. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), adolescent mental health is critically important because it influences immediate well-being, long-term health outcomes, social functioning, and national development. Increasing academic pressure, unhealthy lifestyles, social expectations, and technological dependence have contributed to rising levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and emotional disturbances among adolescents worldwide. Yoga, an ancient mind–body practice integrating physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation, has emerged as a promising non-pharmacological intervention for improving mental health among adolescents. Evidence from various studies suggests that yoga significantly reduces stress, anxiety, anger, and depressive symptoms while improving emotional regulation, self-esteem, mindfulness, concentration, and academic performance. This systematic review aims to examine the effects of yoga on adolescent mental health through the analysis of available literature. Findings indicate that regular yoga practice contributes positively to psychological well-being and emotional resilience. The review concludes that integrating yoga into school curricula and adolescent health programs may serve as an effective, affordable, and holistic strategy for promoting mental well-being among adolescents.
