Abstract

This conceptual paper examines whether the long-term transition toward interstellar civilization may require not only more capable spacecraft, but a transformation of the traveler itself. Human intelligence emerged in biological organisms adapted to terrestrial conditions. Rather than assuming that this biological form remains fixed indefinitely, the paper explores possible transitions from biological and trans-biological existence toward post-biological forms of intelligence, including synthetic embodiment, human–AI integration, distributed cognition, and hypothetical substrate migration. A central distinction is developed between replacement and continuation. Artificial systems may simply outlive their biological creators, or biological and artificial cognition may progressively converge until the distinction between creator and creation no longer adequately describes the resulting civilization.
