Abstract
Contemporary neuroscience and the philosophy of mind have long operated under the implicit assumption that subjective experience—qualia—is generated exclusively by the brain. Despite remarkable progress in identifying the neural correlates of consciousness, this assumption has failed to explain why objective physical processes give rise to subjective, felt experience. We demonstrate that neurotransmitters and hormones such as serotonin, oxytocin, dopamine, and cortisol—traditionally regarded as mere chemical messengers—function as carriers of subjective tone, modulating not only physiological states but also the very quality of experience itself. We examine the enteric nervous system as the primary source of basal affective tone, the intrinsic cardiac nervous system as an integrator of emotional signals, and the reticular formation as the physiological bridge that links visceral information to cortical processing. We propose an integrative model of consciousness in which subjective experience arises not from the computational activity of the brain alone but as a resonance among four levels: the chemical background, the enteric network, the cardiac network, and the cerebral cortex. Consciousness, on this account, is an emergent property of the coherent functioning of the whole organism, and metacognition is a secondary superstructure that cannot replace the primary feeling of being-in-the-body. The article concludes with two falsifiable experimental protocols involving vagus nerve stimulation and microbiota modulation, which can be tested with currently available methods. We propose a new research programme centred not on the search for neural correlates of consciousness but on the study of bodily coherence as the physiological foundation of subjective experience.
