Abstract
The article deals with the research of the individual creative method of the English writer Virginia Woolf. The features of the creativity of the writer during the period of writing the analyzed stories are investigated; among them are: appeal to the inner world as an object of the image; subjectivization of the process of crea -tivity; ethical relativism; the disappearance of social issues; appearance of imperfect personality; open final of a literary work; elitization of culture; fragmentation. The use of the stream of consciousness as a creative method is analyzed and described, using the examples of the scarcely studied stories of the writer; considered the birth and further development of it in the English-language modernist literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The very concept of “stream of consciousness” and the distinctions between the first term and the “inner monologue” are analyzed. We understand the stream of consciousness as the way of narration, imitating the work of human consciousness and the subconscious. The inner monologue organizes and regu lates the course of thoughts and experiences; it is an artistic method of psychologism which means the repro duction of the characters` speech, turned to themselves and not uttered aloud. The article presents the features of the stream of consciousness in the English-language modernist literature, among which: absence of a clear sequence of thoughts; spontaneity of thoughts and images; the combination of conscious and unconscious; increased emotionality; particular attention to the spiritual life of the individual; deep psychology. The types of verbal penetration into the inner world of people are considered.
