Abstract

In the present study, we examine the unifying element underlying different forms of meditation. The central concept identified in our analysis is silence, understood as a sacred and integrative dimension across contemplative practices. Mental silence is considered an essential stage common to all types of meditation, which itself constitutes an ancient and widely practiced discipline. A literature review was conducted using the PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Embase, and Cochrane databases. The search strategy included the terms “neuroscience” and “mental silence.” Dissertations and books were excluded, and only peer-reviewed scientific articles published within the last five years were included in the analysis. The objective of this study was to examine findings within the field of neuroscience that seek to identify the brain regions activated during meditation practice. The results indicate that long-term meditation practitioners exhibit increased functional connectivity in the brain. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the state of mental silence constitutes a unifying principle that underlies diverse meditation practices.
