Time is typically treated as an unexamined background for intelligence. This paper inverts that perspective by asking what becomes of intelligence when the conditions that enable intelligent processes are progressively stripped away. We construct two minimal models of intelligence—a functional model derived from philosophy of mind, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science, and an abstract physical model drawn from complex adaptive systems—and subject them to a philosophical thought experiment involving "Black Walls": conceptual boundaries beyond which fundamental temporal properties (ordered change, structured state transitions, and causal continuity) no longer obtain. In Case I, where all change is impossible, every component of intelligence collapses. In Case II, where change occurs but states are completely uncorrelated, information processing, learning, and goal-directedness dissolve.
