Romantic philosophy, as expressed in literature, involved more than the discovery of God's immanence in nature; it centered on a metaphysics of dream directly lived by authors, founded on the concept of the inner man and the dichotomy of interiority and exteriority inherited from St. Augustine. This operative metaphysics brought dream into real life, exemplified in the works of Gautier and Eminescu, who literaturized a technology of ascending man to heaven through psychedelic dreams, often induced by hashish.
