The Epistemology of Asy-Syadzily’s Spiritual Education in Jami’ Al Ushul fi Al Auliya’

Spiritual education in the Islamic tradition aims at inner transformation, character building, and strengthening the human relationship with Allah, not merely transmitting religious knowledge. This research analyzes the epistemology of spiritual education from Abu al-Ḥasan Asy Syadzily, as presented in his work Jami‘ al-Uṣul fi al-Awliya’. Asy Syadzily’s epistemology integrates three dimensions: al-‘ilm (spiritual knowledge), al-ḥal (transformation of inner state), and al-‘amal (actualization of spiritual values in action). Knowledge must lead to transformation of spiritual consciousness through purification of the soul (tazkiyat al-nafs) and closeness to Allah. The ideal human (insan kamil) emerges from a dialectical relationship between knowledge mastery, spiritual experience, and ethical practice. This perspective can serve as an epistemological foundation for Islamic education balancing cognitive, affective, and practical aspects.
