Shabdha Brahman: Yogic Mantra-Oriented Sound Consciousness Experience for the Wellbeing of Humankind
Journal of Research in Music May 3, 2025 Randika Perera
Mantra yoga, rooted in the ancient Vedic concept of Shabdha Brahman, uses sound and speech at four levels to guide practitioners from ordinary waking consciousness toward a transcendent experience. The practice employs Sanskrit mantras—Bija, Saguna, and Nirguna—which, according to Vedic science, stimulate subtle-body energy points, generating vibrational energy that purifies mind, body, and soul. Originally a ritualistic component of sacrificial yajnas, mantra yoga later evolved into a transcendental practice. In the contemporary world, it promotes individual well-being from scientific and therapeutic perspectives, though its sound-oriented aspects are sometimes combined with music and aesthetics for entertainment.
