Global Social Witnessing: An Educational Tool for Awareness-Based Systems Change in the Era of Global Humanitarian and Planetary Crisis

Journal of Awareness-Based Systems Change June 12, 2024 Kazuma Matoba

Global social witnessing, a practice of contemplative social cognition, has not yet been rigorously researched or clearly defined. This paper proposes it as an educational tool for awareness-based systems change, grounding the concept in the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas and emphasizing relational responsibility and transformative, systemic learning. The work explores ethical implications of bearing witness, a term used in psychotherapy, and aims to generate interdisciplinary research questions for fields including philosophy, sociology, psychology, education, neuroscience, and physics.

Presencing with Soul

Journal of Awareness-Based Systems Change June 12, 2024 Jessica Bockler

Theory U, an awareness-based social change methodology, outlines seven stages of presencing that aim to enable deeper modes of perception and knowing for social, economic, and cultural renewal. This paper illuminates those stages by drawing on transpersonal psychology, quantum physics, and consciousness studies, operationalizing key processes such as “letting go,” “letting come,” “connecting to source,” and “dialoguing with the universe.” The first half maps the seven stages onto three core streams of consciousness, highlighting psychosomatic dynamics and challenges. The second half explores practical and ethical implications, considering capacities, attitudes, and frameworks needed for skilful and safe presencing practice.
