Differential effects of mindfulness meditation conditions on repetitive negative thinking and subjective time perspective: a randomized active-controlled study

Psychology and Health October 23, 2020 Susanna Feruglio, Alessio Matiz, A. Grecucci et al.

Different mindfulness techniques produce distinct effects on mental rumination and time perspective. In an 8-week study, 75 healthy young adults were assigned to mindful breathing, body scan, observing-thoughts meditation, or an active control group. All meditation groups improved mindfulness skills more than the control group. Mindful breathing specifically reduced brooding and increased a positive view of the future compared to the other techniques. These differential effects suggest that tailoring meditation practices could enhance interventions aimed at reducing maladaptive thinking and fostering optimism.

Meditation and telomere length: a meta-analysis

Psychology and Health January 5, 2020 N. Schutte, J. Malouff, S. Keng

A meta-analysis of 11 studies (12 comparisons) found that individuals who meditate have longer telomeres than control participants, with an overall weighted effect size of g = .40. After removing an outlier, the effect shrank to g = .16. More hours of meditation were associated with larger effects. The authors conclude that these findings provide tentative support for the hypothesis that meditation is linked to longer telomeres and that greater practice time may strengthen the association, suggesting meditation-based interventions could prevent telomere shortening or lengthen telomeres.
