Brain resting state functional connectivity changes with aerobic exercise, and mindfulness: A narrative review.

A narrative review of 30 studies examined how exercise, mindful movement, and mindfulness training affect resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) in the brains of non-clinical adults. Most studies reported changes in rsFC within the default mode, executive control, and salience networks. However, the largest and most methodologically rigorous study found minimal associations between rsFC and either exercise or mindfulness. Given the inconsistent results, caution is warranted in interpreting changes in rsFC attributable to these interventions. Methodological consistency in fMRI acquisition, data preparation, and analytical approaches is crucial to improve reproducibility and allow for comparison and aggregation.

Effects of meditation and mind-body exercise on brain-derived neurotrophic factor: A literature review of human experimental studies

A review of 15 studies suggests that mindfulness meditation and mind-body exercises such as yoga and tai chi may increase circulating concentrations of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that supports neuroplasticity and cognitive function. The evidence comes from seven randomized controlled trials, three non-randomized studies, and five uncontrolled studies. However, many of these studies had small sample sizes or lacked randomized controls, so the findings are not definitive. Further research is needed to confirm whether these practices reliably boost BDNF and improve brain function across different populations.
