Effect of advance meditation program on electrocardiogram, blood pressure, and stress level in young healthy adults

Heart India January 11, 2018 M Sharma, S Kacker, N Saboo et al.

A meditation program combining yoga, pranayama, and Sudarshan Kriya lowers heart rate, blood pressure, and stress scores in first-time participants and in those who have practiced Padam Sadhna for at least two years. The Advance Meditation Program (AMP) produced significant changes in heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, RR interval, PR interval, and stress scores. These findings suggest that AMP may serve as a nonpharmacological approach to reducing stress, anxiety, and cardiovascular risk.

Changes in heart rate variability following yogic visual concentration (Trataka)

Heart India December 18, 2017 B R Raghavendra, V Ramamurthy

A yogic visual concentration technique called trataka increases vagal tone and reduces sympathetic arousal, similar to meditation. In thirty healthy male volunteers aged 20–33, a single session of trataka significantly decreased low-frequency heart rate variability and increased high-frequency heart rate variability, while breath rate and heart rate also dropped significantly. A control session showed no changes. The findings suggest trataka, though traditionally a cleansing practice, can induce a calm mental state.
