‘’The Science Behind Raj Yoga Meditation-A Narrative Review’’
Advancement in Yoga and Physical Therapy October 31, 2023 2 citations
Raj yoga meditation (RM) is a contemplative practice distinct from asana-based, mindfulness, and loving-kindness meditations. This narrative review describes the neurobiological mechanisms underlying RM, focusing on the release of anandamide, a neurotransmitter associated with bliss, which may aid in treating substance use disorders. The authors also discuss roles of serotonin, vasopressin, and GABA in mediating RM's effects. They argue that RM promotes positive thinking and belief in one's capabilities, citing examples where suggestion alone influenced health outcomes, such as patients developing illness after being told they would, or experiencing pain relief from sham surgery. The review suggests RM could benefit conditions including coronary artery disease, drug addiction, obesity, and neuropsychiatric disorders.
