Effects of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy on mental disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

Journal of Research in Nursing November 29, 2012 Julieta Galante, Sarah Iribarren, Patricia F. Pearce 78 citations

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) reduces the rate of depression relapse by 40% in patients with three or more previous episodes of major depression after one year of follow-up. This conclusion comes from a systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 randomized controlled trials, most of which evaluated depression and compared MBCT added to usual treatment against usual treatment alone. Other outcomes for depression and anxiety showed significant results but were unstable in sensitivity analyses. The methodological quality of the included reports was moderate. MBCT is an effective intervention for this specific patient population.

Nurses' perceived stress and compassion following a mindfulness meditation and self compassion training

Journal of Research in Nursing December 1, 2017 Marie Ann Mahon, Lorraine Mee, Denise Brett et al.

A pilot study using a quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test design examined the effects of a mindfulness meditation intervention on nurses' perceived stress and compassion. Among 90 nurses at three university teaching hospitals, 64 completed both pre- and post-intervention scales. Perceived stress was significantly reduced after the intervention. Compassion scores increased, with a significant finding for nurses at one hospital. No significant differences emerged between 6-week and 8-week interventions. The results suggest mindfulness meditation training can positively impact perceived stress and enhance compassion in nurses.
