Severe impairments of consciousness, such as those seen in coma or vegetative states, involve dysfunction of the brainstem or cerebrum. The modified Glasgow coma scale aids in immediate assessment and emergency stabilization. Prognosis depends heavily on the underlying cause and is always uncertain.
