A paradigm shift in science is underway, driven by a clash between the traditional Western mechanistic worldview and a holistic perspective that accommodates direct, non-intellectual experiences of reality. In ordinary consciousness, a person identifies closely with their body image, but in altered states such as deep meditation, identity can expand to encompass others, granting intuitive knowledge beyond one's intellectual background. Identifying with another person can provide access to their thoughts, feelings, sensations, or memories. This holds implications for communication science, as altered states of consciousness are proposed as an additional source of interpersonal communication knowledge for creating shared meaning, and inclusion of this field should be seriously considered.
