Psychedelic drugs, once prohibited, are being reconsidered as medicines. Clinical trials are testing their effects on conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, addiction, and end-of-life care, but evidence is still insufficient. This review covers the history, mechanisms, therapeutic effects, and precautions of psychedelic drugs.

Interest in using psychedelics to treat mental disorders that resist standard therapies is growing, yet research on their side effects and safety remains scarce. This review describes how psychedelics are classified, how they work, and what adverse effects they can cause, while also examining recent safety studies. Safe medical use depends on understanding both the scientific foundation and the potential risks. The authors aim to encourage discussion among mental health professionals about side effects and safety to promote safe and effective clinical application.
