Psychedelic Art Therapy: The Intersection of Psychedelics, Creativity, and Art Therapy

Art Therapy April 20, 2026 Rebecca Ann Wilkinson, Alyssa B. Gursky

Renewed psychedelic research indicates these substances can relieve trauma, treatment-resistant depression, addictions, and end-of-life distress by promoting neuroplasticity, stimulating creativity, dampening fear, softening rigid beliefs, and fostering unity. Art therapy, with its non-verbal and experiential nature, is well suited for psychedelic-assisted therapy, offering a way to externalize and engage with the ineffable qualities of non-ordinary states of consciousness. The article describes a psychedelic art therapy approach that integrates art therapy principles into preparation, dosing, and integration phases, and presents research recommendations, training competencies, and ethical considerations.

Efficacy of a Single Session Mindfulness-based Art Therapy Doodle Intervention

Art Therapy April 18, 2023 Patricia D. Isis, Rebecca Bokoch, G. Fowler et al.

A single two-hour virtual mindful doodling workshop increased self-reported mindfulness, mindful creativity, and positive emotions, and decreased negative emotions in a community sample of 71 adults. Participants reported their perceptions before and after the session, and the changes were statistically significant. The findings suggest that a brief art therapy intervention may promote mindfulness, creativity, and emotional well-being in the general community.
