Towards a Phenomenology of the Digitalization of Consciousness. The Virtualization of the Social Space

Postmodern Openings June 18, 2019 A. Sandu

The digitalization of everyday experience replaces authentic experience with digital artefacts such as cybersex, augmented reality, and revolutions 2.0, and even proposes fully digitizing consciousness to extend life indefinitely. This paper identifies and analyzes philosophical perspectives on cultural mutations in transmodern society following the virtualization of social space. Virtual space is non-tridimensional, where topological distance specific to human cohabitation is replaced by intersubjective distance, defined as the subjective intensity of communication. Understanding this virtualization may open new investigative horizons in the philosophy of mentalities, cultural anthropology, communication sciences, and technoethics.
