Mathematics, Brain Modelling and Indian Concept of Mind

arXiv Preprint Archive May 6, 2002 Bikas K. Chakrabarti preprint

We describe briefly the recent advances in understanding the distributed nature of computations in the (neural) network structure of the brain. We discuss if such artificial networks will be able to perform mathematics and natural sciences. The problem of consciousness in such machines is addressed. Ancient Indian ideas regarding mind-body relations and J. C. Bose's experimental observations...

Consciousness in Physics

arXiv Preprint Archive March 7, 2002 Joe Henson preprint

This essay discusses the idea that a Theory of Everything would not be complete without a theory of consciousness as one of its parts, and the suggestion that new physics may be needed to describe consciousness. I argue that the motivations behind searching for such a theory arise as the result of misunderstandings over the use of language when talking about consciousness.

A Classical Probabilistic Computer Model of Consciousness

arXiv Preprint Archive January 25, 2002 Stephen Blaha preprint

We show that human consciousness can be modeled as a classical (not quantum) probabilistic computer. A quantum computer representation does not appear to be indicated because no known feature of consciousness depends on Planck's constant h, the telltale sign of quantum phenomena. It is argued that the facets of consciousness are describable by an object-oriented design with dynamically defined...

Speculations on a Unified Theory of Matter and Mind

arXiv Preprint Archive November 8, 2001 Manoj K. Samal preprint

Physics is so successful today in understanding the nature of matter. What can it say about mind ? Is it possible to have a unified theory of matter and mind within the framework of modern science ? Is Consciousness an accident or is it a natural consequence of laws of nature ? Are these laws of nature the same as the laws of physics ? We make an attempt here to unify mind with matter based on...

Mindless Sensationalism: A Quantum Framework for Consciousness

arXiv Preprint Archive August 8, 2001 Don N. Page preprint

The ideas of Sensible Quantum Mechanics are expressed in lay terms for philosophers of consciousness and others. A framework is proposed and explained for the `psycho-physical-parallelism' between conscious experiences and the mathematical structures of quantum physics (e.g., a set of quantum operators obeying some algebra, and a quantum state giving the expectation value of each operator). In...

Consciousness and Endogenous State Reduction: Two Experiments

arXiv Preprint Archive June 18, 2001 Richard A Mould preprint

It is normally claimed that physical systems create and influence consciousness, but that consciousness cannot influence physical systems. However, I believe that this idea is flawed, and I suggest the following experiments as a way of demonstrating the influence of consciousness on physical systems. The first uses Positron Emission Tomography (PET) with humans, and the second uses...

Unified Theory of Bivacuum, Particles Duality, Time & Fields Bivacuum Mediated Interaction, as a Bridge between Normal and Paranormal

arXiv Preprint Archive March 12, 2001 Alex Kaivarainen preprint

The coherent physical theory of Psi phenomena is absent till now due to its high complexity and multilateral character. The original mechanism of Bivacuum mediated Psi phenomena, proposed here, is based on few stages of my long term efforts. They include creation of new theories: 1) Unified theory of Bivacuum, matter and fields duality, mass and charge origination as a result of Bivacuum...

Quantum theory and the role of mind in nature

arXiv Preprint Archive March 9, 2001 Henry P. Stapp preprint

Orthodox Copenhagen quantum theory renounces the quest to understand the reality in which we are imbedded, and settles for practical rules describing connections between our observations. Many physicist have regarded this renunciation of our effort to describe nature herself as premature, and John von Neumann reformulated quantum theory as a theory of an evolving objective universe interacting...

Quantum mechanics and consciousness: fact and fiction

arXiv Preprint Archive February 9, 2001 Ulrich Mohrhoff preprint

This article was written in response to a request from an editor of American Vedantist. It is shown that the idea that consciousness is essential to understanding quantum mechanics arises from logical fallacies. This may be welcome news to those who share the author's annoyance at consciousness being dragged into discussions of physics, but beware: The same fallacies may underlie the reader's...

What the liar paradox can reveal about the quantum logical structure of our minds

arXiv Preprint Archive January 15, 2001 Erhard Bieberich preprint

In human consciousness perceptions are distinct or atomistic events despite being perceived by an apparently undivided inner observer. This paper applies both classical (Boolean) and quantum logic to analysis of the Liar paradox which is taken as a typical example of a self-referential negation in the perception space of an undivided observer. The conception of self-referential paradoxes is a...

On a Physical Metatheory of Consciousness

arXiv Preprint Archive October 11, 2000 Miroljub Dugic, Dejan Rakovic, Milan M. Cirkovic preprint

We show that the modern quantum mechanics, and particularly the theory of decoherence, allows for formulating a sort of a physical metatheory of consciousness. Particularly, the analysis of the necessary conditions for the occurrence of decoherence, along with the hypothesis that consciousness bears (more-or-less) well definable physical origin, leads to a wider physical picture naturally...

Emergent Consciousness: From the Early Universe to Our Mind

arXiv Preprint Archive July 5, 2000 P. A. Zizzi preprint

In a previous paper (gr-qc/9907063) we described the early inflationary universe in terms of quantum information. In this paper, we analize those results in more detail, and we stress the fact that, during inflation, the universe can be described as a superposed state of quantum registers. The self-reduction of the superposed quantum state is consistent with the Penrose's Objective Reduction...

Elementary Act of Consciousness or Cycle of Mind, involving Distant and Nonlocal Interaction

arXiv Preprint Archive March 21, 2000 Alex Kaivarainen preprint

Each macroscopic process can be subdivided on the quantum and classical stages. Particularly, the quantum stages of Cycle of Mind involves:1) the stimulation of dynamic correlation between water clusters in the same and remote microtubules (MTs) in state of mesoscopic Bose condensation (mBC) by phonons (acoustic waves) and by librational IR photons (electromagnetic-EM waves) distant exchange;...

Can Science `explain' Consciousness ?

arXiv Preprint Archive February 24, 2000 M K Samal preprint

Consciousness is the process by which one attributes `meaning' to the world. Considering F$\phi$llesdal's definition of `meaning' as the joint product of all `evidence' that is available to those who `communicate', we conclude that science can, not only reduce all the {\em evidence} to a Basic Entity (we call BE), but also can `explain' consciousness once a suitable definition for {\em...

Amplifying Phenomenal Information: Toward a Fundamental Theory of Consciousness

arXiv Preprint Archive November 9, 1999 L. Gabora preprint

Fundamental approaches bypass the problem of getting consciousness from non-conscious components by positing that consciousness is a universal primitive. For example, the double aspect theory of information holds that information has a phenomenal aspect. How then do you get from phenomenal information to human consciousness? This paper proposes that an entity is conscious to the extent it...

What are quantum theorists doing at a conference on consciousness?

arXiv Preprint Archive February 9, 1996 Euan Squires preprint

The reason why orthodox quantum theory necessarily invokes consciousness is explained. Several procedures whereby the Born probability rule can be introduced are discussed, and reasons are given for prefering one in which consciousness selects a unique realised world. Consciousness is something outside of the laws of physics (quantum mechanics), but it has a real effect upon the experienced...

Chance, Choice, and Consciousness: The Role of Mind in the Quantum Brain

arXiv Preprint Archive November 21, 1995 Henry P. Stapp preprint

Contemporary quantum mechanical description of nature involves two processes. The first is a dynamical process governed by the equations of local quantum field theory. This process is local and deterministic, but it generates a structure that is not compatible with observed reality. A second process is therefore invoked. This second process somehow analyzes the structure generated by the first...

Theory of Brain Function, Quantum Mechanics and Superstrings

arXiv Preprint Archive May 24, 1995 D. Nanopoulos preprint

Recent developments/efforts to understand aspects of the brain function at the {\em sub-neural} level are discussed. MicroTubules (MTs) participate in a wide variety of dynamical processes in the cell, especially in bioinformation processes such as learning and memory, by possessing a well-known binary error-correcting code with 64 words. In fact, MTs and DNA/RNA are unique cell structures that...
