Design- and Craft thinking analysed as Embodied Cognition

Design thinking is often treated as an intellectual, planning-focused activity, but the physical act of making and the role of the body in generating knowledge are equally important. This investigation of embodied cognition in design and craft practices examined three cases: deafblind ceramics makers, a practitioner's self-study of working with clay, and design students exploring materials through touch. The findings indicate that thinking in design is not separate from the body; the body itself acts as a source of knowledge and sense-making during the creative process.
