Examining Confucian and Daoist philosophies over time, the work explores the experiential, sensual, and performative dimensions of dance. Confucian ritualistic choreography and Daoist flowing improvisation each express an individual's ideal "meeting point," striving to fulfill the Chinese ideal of the heavenly "being."
Daoist practitioners have long integrated medical care into their spiritual cultivation as an act of compassion and service to the community. The author, a Daoist priest and practitioner, explains that ritual medicine—such as talismans, incantations, and celestial medicine—has been practiced since organized Daoist communities emerged, exemplified by the Celestial Masters and the Way of Great Peace during the Later Han dynasty. This practice stems from the Daoist precept of compassion, one of the three treasures in Laozi's Daode jing. Daoist celestial medicine differs from Chinese medicine by relying on religious ideals and cultivation skills rather than solely on natural sciences like yin-yang and the five phases.
