Self castration in trance and possession disorder: a case report

Journal of Institute of Medicine Nepal August 31, 2017 S Adhikari, Sb Pant, Sp Ojha et al.

Self-castration is rare and usually linked to psychotic disorders, but it can also occur in non-psychotic individuals due to autoerotic acts, attempts at sex change, or religious delusions. A 35-year-old man from rural Nepal with a seven-year history of trance and possession spells and amnesia for the event inflicted a scrotal injury on himself. Surgical orchiectomy was performed two days later, and his recovery was uneventful. This case is notable because self-castration in dissociative disorder is seldom reported.
