Mindfulness-Based Interventions for Anxiety and Depression

Psychiatric Clinics of North America September 18, 2017 S. Hofmann, Angelina F Gómez

Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs), particularly Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), effectively reduce anxiety and depression symptom severity in treatment-seeking individuals. These interventions consistently outperform non-evidence-based treatments and active control conditions like health education, relaxation training, and supportive psychotherapy, and perform comparably to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). The treatment principles of MBIs align with standard CBT, advancing cognitive and behavioral treatments for depression and anxiety.
