Scientific impact of meditation, pranayama, and Yogasana in stress management: A nuro-biological perspective

International Journal of Humanities and Education Research January 1, 2026 Sulagna Lenka

A review of scientific evidence on meditation, breath regulation (Pranayama), and physical postures (Yogasanas) from yoga tradition shows these practices collectively reduce stress by calming the nervous system. Meditation techniques like mindfulness and transcendental meditation lower perceived stress and cortisol levels by activating the parasympathetic nervous system. Breath regulation techniques such as Nadi Shodhana and Bhramari improve autonomic function and emotional regulation. Physical postures promote physical relaxation and mental focus. Randomized controlled trials report significant improvements in psychological well-being and decreases in anxiety and depression scores following integrated yoga interventions. These practices offer a holistic, non-pharmacological approach to stress management.

Excessive stress impairs mental and physical functioning, making stress management crucial for peak athletic performance. Yoga, a mind-body practice rooted in ancient Indian philosophy combining meditation, breath control, and physical postures, helps athletes cope with stress. The essay analyzes how yoga affects physiological and psychological stress responses, improves attention and recovery, and leads to better athletic outcomes. Drawing on empirical research and theoretical understanding, it concludes that yoga is a beneficial supplemental activity for athletes seeking to improve overall performance.
