An integrative review of recent literature indicates that Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programs effectively reduce stress among nurses working in long-term care, post-acute care, and assisted living settings. Reduced stress is associated with improved patient outcomes, increased nurse resiliency, enhanced job satisfaction, and decreased organizational costs from nurse turnover. The review supports implementing formal MBSR programs to improve nurse self-care, mental health, and retention. Future research should examine optimal implementation strategies and long-term effects in these settings.
Higher mindfulness levels are associated with reduced anxiety and depression and improved health-related quality of life in people with Parkinson's disease. Anxiety and depression fully mediated the link between the observing and non-judging facets of mindfulness and quality of life, while the acting with awareness facet was partially mediated by both anxiety and depression, and the describing facet was fully mediated by depression alone. Psychologically distressed individuals had significantly lower mindfulness and poorer quality of life than non-distressed individuals. The authors propose that integrating mindfulness interventions into clinical care for neurodegenerative diseases could improve psychological well-being.
An 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction program for elderly residents in rural old age homes in Salem, Tamil Nadu, India, led to a 25% increase in mindfulness scores and a 30% decrease in perceived stress, compared to a 5% increase and 5% decrease in a control group. Participants reported improved emotional regulation, well-being, social engagement, and reduced loneliness. The findings suggest that mindfulness practices can effectively address mental health challenges in rural elderly populations.
A double-blind randomized controlled trial with 75 patients with mild cognitive impairment and insomnia found that mindfulness therapy significantly improved sleep quality, cognitive function, and reduced anxiety and perceived stress compared to health education. The mindfulness group showed significant improvements in sleep and cognition, with confidence intervals indicating reliable effects. EEG data revealed significant differences in delta, theta, beta, and gamma brainwave bands between rest and mindfulness states, suggesting deep relaxation and changes in attention-related brain activity. No deaths or serious adverse events occurred. Mindfulness can be successfully learned by individuals with mild cognitive impairment and is suitable for use in nursing homes.
