A mindfulness-based training program for physical therapists improved work engagement, mental health, and reduced moral distress. Thirteen physical therapists participated in a pilot study; nine completed six mindfulness sessions over three months covering topics such as meaning in therapy, self-awareness, compassion fatigue, and self-care. The control group of four did not receive the training. Therapists reported that difficulty prioritizing self-care and limited personal time hindered well-being, while the inability to effect change contributed to compassion fatigue and burnout. The program shows promise for enhancing therapist well-being, employee retention, and patient care.
In a small pilot study, psilocybin, compared to diphenhydramine, altered brain activity in people with alcohol use disorder when they viewed alcohol and emotional images. Psilocybin increased activity in the medial and lateral prefrontal cortex and left caudate, and decreased activity in the insular, motor, temporal, parietal, and occipital cortices and cerebellum. For negative cues, psilocybin increased supramarginal gyrus activity; for positive cues, it increased right hippocampus activity and decreased left hippocampus activity. These changes suggest enhanced goal-directed action, improved emotional regulation, and diminished craving, warranting larger studies.
