A new ibogaine derivative, N-(hydroxymethyl)ibogaine, was synthesized by reacting ibogaine with a formaldehyde-acetic acid solution at pH 4. The crystal structure of this compound, which belongs to the iboga indole family, is stabilized by an intermolecular O-H⋯N hydrogen bond. The compound's identity was confirmed using one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy.
