Pursuing an understanding of animal consciousness: Implications for animal morality and a creaturely theology

The article examines how new research on consciousness, especially in animals, raises questions about animal rights, morality, and the development of a creaturely theology and theological primatology. It explores understanding nonhuman animals through concepts like consciousness, thinking, awareness, language, and communication, emphasizing the role of emotion. Special attention is given to animal communication as revealed in bonobo and other chimpanzee research. Building on awareness and communication, the article discusses animal morality and aspects of a creaturely theology, situating these issues within the context of an increasingly trans-human techno-scientific environment.

This article engages with Cornel du Toit's discussion of an awakened universe in panpsychist discourses, using panpsychism as its primary methodological framework. It argues that consciousness has often been dismissed as inferior in the philosophy of science. Drawing on Pieter Crafferd's work, it adopts a pragmatic approach and incorporates Margaret Cavendish's narrative to illustrate the importance of consciousness. Cavendish, a 17th-century figure, challenged male-dominated spheres through her utopian fiction and early feminist thought, as seen in works like The Blazing World, The Contract, and Assault and consequent chastity.
