This article examines Sufism's relationship to mysticism, arguing that mysticism centers on mystical experience, often understood as union with ultimate reality. The authors contend that Sufism qualifies as Islamic mysticism because it emphasizes mystical experience of God, yet it remains distinctive through its focus on moral development and human behavior. Using qualitative library research and content analysis of relevant texts, the article concludes that Sufism has contributed significantly to Islamic civilization and modernity, spanning Islamic psychology, metaphysics, art, literature, human peace, and responses to spiritual crisis.
