The Relationship between Neuroticism, Nightmare Characteristics and Suffering in respect to PTSD Psychopathology

Among 346 traumatized soldiers (47% with PTSD), neuroticism predicted nightmare-related suffering but not nightmare frequency or replicativity beyond PTSD symptoms. Neuroticism's contribution to suffering was only partly explained by PTSD severity. In soldiers with PTSD, neuroticism showed no additional effects beyond symptom severity and nightmare replicativity. Neither neuroticism nor PTSD severity moderated the link between nightmare characteristics and suffering. The authors conclude that neuroticism predicts PTSD severity and nightmare distress but not nightmare occurrence, and does not increase vulnerability to suffering from frequent or replicative nightmares.
