The Connection Between Literary Images and Visual Perception in Meditative Practice
AM Journal of Art and Media Studies October 15, 2024 Ksenija Popadić
The connection between literary images and visual perception in contemplative practices is an underexplored area. This article argues that elements such as mental imagery, cognitive and sensory processes, and emotional processes link literary depictions to visual perception during meditation. Practices examined include contemplative meditation, creative visualization, koan meditation, imaginative meditation, haiku workshops, and meditative storytelling. Literary techniques like metaphors and similes are highlighted as important. Neuroscience studies are cited to suggest that reading or hearing descriptive texts activates brain areas involved in actual visual perception, indicating overlapping neural processing. This connection is proposed to enhance meditative quality and personal development.
